AREAS OF INTEREST
David’s consultancy work covers strategy and clinical service redesign, leadership development, organisational development and coaching, especially of clinicians.
RECENT CAREER HISTORY
David qualified as a doctor in 1975 and spent 32 years in the NHS including as a consultant physician/senior lecturer in a teaching hospital, clinical director, medical director and interim chief executive. He has spent time in the Department of Health as advisor on Winter Pressures and as Director of Organisational and Clinical Development in a Strategic Health Authority. His last role in the NHS was as Medical Director in a successful ‘turnaround’ team to remove an acute trust from ‘special measures’.
CONSULTANCY EXPERIENCE
David's recent consultancy work has included:
• Reviewing the emergency services across a county on behalf of the commissioning PCT
• Leading a scoping project for an SHA to determine the factors that are important in designing senior clinical leadership development programmes
• Supporting the establishment of a managed clinical service network for neurosurgery across Scotland
• Facilitating the development of stroke and cardiac services across a region to support rapid access to thrombolytic and angioplasty services
• Development work for non-executive directors of NHS organisations
• Coaching senior clinicians with particular emphasis on their transition to clinical or general management roles
